Dentist in central HK describes the purpose of root canal treatment
At the practice of Dr. Titania Tong in Central, HK, patients in the area can ask about the benefits of a variety of procedures, including root canal therapy. This treatment has a purpose, providing patients with a way of addressing an infection of the natural tooth without requiring extraction. Root canal therapy is a standard procedure done when patients are dealing with:
  • Extremely large cavities within the tooth
  • Infection and inflammation of the dental pulp within a tooth
  • Abscesses
  • Injury to the tooth
If extraction of a tooth is not the treatment of choice then the only alternative is root canal therapy.

HOW IS ROOT CANAL THERAPY PERFORMED?

Also known as endodontic therapy, Dr Titania Tong is experienced in providing this treatment, which unfortunately, many patients are fearful of. However, a root canal procedure is pain free, thanks to proper local anesthetics and possibly sedation. To start the procedure, patients are made comfortable in the dental chair. Then, once the area is numbed and patients are at ease, the procedure begins using special instruments and precision techniques, Dr. Titania Tong removes the dental pulp (the mass of tissues within the tooth). The area inside the tooth is disinfected with biocompatible ozone and filled with root canal sealer and then with a composite filling material. Once a tooth has been root treated, it is a dead tooth and will become brittle. So in many situations, patients may also have a dental crown to protect it and give it the strength it needs to function properly.

WHY CHOOSE ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

For some people, losing a tooth just isn’t an option. So although root canal therapy has its own contraindications and overall health considerations need to be taken into account,  it does offer an extension to the life of the tooth. Patients shouldn’t be worried about having this treatment performed in our office, as we have performed it on a regular basis for years!

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

Any patients who are faced with possible removal of their natural teeth due to infected pulp may want to consider the benefits of having this procedure performed to save their smile. Without root canal therapy, patients would be in a position of having to replace their missing teeth with dental bridges, dental implants, or partial dentures. We routinely discuss all the pros and cons of both root canal treatment and extraction so to allow the patient to make an informed choice on their preferred treatment.

HOW LONG DOES THIS PROCEDURE TAKE?

The procedure requires from three to four visits of around an hour each time. If sedation is required patients need to be accompanied home after each visit.

IS ROOT CANAL THERAPY PAINFUL?
